Original Title: Windows 7 reinstall on HP Mini Laptop I have an HP mini laptop 110-3018 which has recently gone off warranty. The hard drive is fried / not found. I have purchased a replacement which I will install myself. I will need to reinstall an operating system. HP wanted $81 for a recovery pack. How do i get a copy of Windows 7 starter and reinstall it on this machine. There is not a Windows license # on the machine, but i believe it registered itself with Microsoft when it first booted up.

I was swapping out the old HDD with a cheap SSD, so naturally couldn't use any of the (rubbish) OS recovery tools.
Ripped an ISO of my Windows 7 Home Premium DVD. Found this more convenient than downloading 2.4GB over my parent's slow connection.:P. Removed the ei.cfg file from the ISO using the. Because the netbook didn't have a CD/DVD-ROM drive, I needed to use the tool. This allows the computer to boot the Windows 7 setup from a thumb drive.
However, I discovered a quirk (after many failed attempts and lots of forum searching): the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool seems to perform on-the-fly verification, and adds the ei.cfg file back in. This meant that every time I attempted the install, it didn't give me a choice of which edition of Windows to install. The only way I made it work in the end was to directly modify the ei.cfg file on the USB drive before booting. This is what I ended up with (note the modified line): EditionID HomePremium Starter Channel Retail VL 0. After I made that change, it installed perfectly first time!. Also, I found that skipping the licence key bit during the setup and doing it later in Windows itself ( after setting up the wireless drives etc.) seemed to work better.
The computer spent a very long time stuck on that screen otherwise. Was probably trying to 'phone home', but not sure. If I can save someone else a few hours, it'll be worth it.:) EDIT: Updated link.
